The short clock: a dated gap. The bullion floor under solid-gold references remains 7–9% below its August peak while dealer tags lag. This week’s US CPI resolves the September 16 meeting and, with it, the metal’s near-term direction. Cool print: the floor lifts and the gap closes from below. Hot print: the discount persists a while longer. Either way, gold-case targets should be priced and decided this week — gaps with visible expiry dates do not reward deliberation.
The long clock: the floor keeps rising. Twenty-two consecutive months of Chinese official buying, holdings now 76.73 million fine ounces. This is the mechanism collectors should internalise: sustained sovereign demand is why gold has risen more than 60% in five years, why brands have repriced gold references upward repeatedly, and why vintage gold pieces bought a decade ago quietly outperformed their steel siblings. The pressed €5k–15k middle keeps deepening as hawkish rates squeeze marginal buyers — the decade’s value shelf, best hunted patiently. CPO’s ~13% annual growth gives depth and exit liquidity. And with strikes now hitting shipping lanes, the portability premium on great watches — value that crosses borders in a pocket — is more than theoretical this season.
